I have an old 47 John Deere M that I use to mow. The thing is it has not been running right. It will start up fire and run smoothly, than after 10-15 minutes it starts stuttering and dies. The carb has not been touched so it should still have the right mixture. I am thinking that all it needs is something easy like new spark plugs and condenser. After work I am going to pull them out and check, I did not have the right tools to remove the spark plugs last night otherwise I would have checked than. PS mine is not pictured, it isn't as clean.

Sounds like a fuel starvation issue. Could be ethanol gunk left over in the jets or feed lines. I’ve had to rebuild 3 small motor carbs lately because of this.

I am hoping this isn't it, but it very well could be. I am gonna check the fuel lines and see what they look like.

This sounds like an issue I had with my Volvo p1800.

The gas tank interior is rusting away. Would start and run fine for 15 or so then die. Hood up, checking the usual suspects, nothing obvious, but during the time the car was stationary enough gas would filter past the rust crumbs at the tank fuel line connection to allow it to run for a spell.

Then die. Repeat.

Could be water in the fuel, though I’d think that’d be apparent before 10-15 minutes. Have you checked the fuel glass sediment bowl? I’ve seen it completely filled with water, didn’t even smell like gas. Tractor ran rough, may have even been stalling, checked the bowl and dumped it out, when it refilled it ran like normal again.

The bowl is clean, and full of gas.

Sounds kind of like vapor lock once the engine warms up, but it could be all kinds of things.

Here’s how to fix it:

1) Remove carb

2) Replace with 4bbl.

This is a valid concern. Fuel feed rate just slightly under the consumption rate, getting worse as operation progresses. Amount in bowl goes slowly lower, lower, lower, *cough*. Could be it.

Another possibility is the coil*, when coils start to go bad they can apparently operate normally when cool, then loose spark as they get hot. I’d check the fuel issues as others have mentioned first, but it would be another, fairly cheap thing to check and replace.

*unless this runs off a Mag, I don’t know my old JD’s.

That’s what my dad thought, I think I am just gonna get all new plugs, condenser and coil. Than fire it up and if it is still acting up I will check the fuel system
